AUSTIN (KXAN) — Veterans day is on Tuesday, but a local brewery and a local non profit spent the day honoring our nations finest a few days early.
Central Machine Works partnered with Merivis, the non profit that supports veterans and military spouses by providing training, mentorship, and job placement when they leave the military.
“Every year 200,000 veterans transition out of the military so what Merivis does is we train veterans for technology careers through very high touch, very structured training,” said Merivis Executive Director, Kate Stoker.
Kelsey Gibson, who is a veteran, said Merivis has helped her in so many ways and she’s happy to see the community show support.
“Having that support system of people who have been through what you have been through and be able to give guidance along with the tangible of a technical learning is super important,” said Gibson.
This was the second annual benefit with another already planned for next year.
Those in attendance got to grab some food, drink a beer or two and take in some live music.
This year David Thacker Band as well as The Drew Fish Band took the stage.
“I think every day should be veterans day,” said Drew Fish. “The reason we get to celebrate holidays, the reason we get to celebrate birthdays, or just drink a beer on a Friday night is because of the veterans who served our country. So this is a day set aside specifically for celebrating the people who have won us those freedoms.”
Central Machine Works also released a new beer, Battle Buddy Hoppy Lager, which is brewed by the brewery’s very own veteran brewer.
“I think that veterans, they pull the weight of the whole country and the least we can do is once a year kind of create like a cool unique offering for them and that is what battle buddy the name itself represents,” said John Bertini with Central Machine Works. “When I was in the army you always had a person in your corner and that was your battle buddy.”
