AUSTIN (KXAN) — A huge shuffle in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings led to Texas making a sizable jump without playing over the weekend.
The Longhorns moved up three spots and back into the top 10 to No. 10, despite being on a bye week, in the latest rankings released Sunday. Previously No. 8 BYU lost 29-7 to Texas Tech and dropped four spots to No. 12, and Virginia tumbled eight spots to No. 20 after falling 16-9 to Wake Forest, clearing a path for the Longhorns to move up.
The top five remained the same from last week — Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia — while Oregon and Ole Miss swapped spots. The Red Raiders moved up a spot to No. 8 with their win over BYU and Notre Dame moved up to No. 9 with its win over Navy.
Voters also decided to move the Longhorns one spot ahead of Oklahoma, a team they beat 23-6 on Oct. 11 in the Red River Rivalry. In previous rankings, the Sooners were still ranked above the Longhorns despite the victory on the field. The College Football Playoff committee rankings had the Longhorns ahead of Oklahoma for that reason last week.
The Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams in the rankings for the first time this season. James Madison, currently at the top of the Sun Belt Conference, moved into the rankings for the first time in three seasons at No. 24. South Florida is the other Group of Five team in the rankings at No. 25.
The Southeastern Conference leads the way with eight teams in. Missouri, Memphis and Washington all dropped out of the poll.
The CFP committee will release its updated rankings on Tuesday.
