AUSTIN (KXAN) – The state is awarding 52 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, totaling over $14 million, to schools across Texas.
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) issues JET grants to help public junior, state and technical colleges, as well as public and charter schools, invest in equipment for career and technical education programs, Gov. Greg Abbott announced in a Friday news release.
“As our economy grows, Texas will continue to invest in the future of our workforce,” Abbott said. “I thank the Texas Workforce Commission and our education partners for training the next generation of hardworking Texans to be part of the better job and bigger paycheck opportunities that we provide in our great state.”
The grants will help institutions train over 6,500 initial students, allowing them to earn licenses, certificates and degrees in fields like nursing, HVAC, welding and engineering, according to the release.
Two Austin-area colleges received JET grants. Austin Community College received over $330,000 to train 50 students in automotive engineering, while Texas State Technical College received over $350,000 to train 40 students in welding.
“These grants strategically target high-growth industries, ensuring workers can find meaningful career opportunities while strengthening Texas’ reputation as the best state for doing business,” TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said.
