AUSTIN (KXAN) — Major airports across the country are preparing for the cancelation of up to 10% of flights beginning Friday due to the ongoing government shutdown, which is now the longest in history.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday it would cut the number of flights from “high-volume” markets to ensure safety, as increasing numbers of air traffic controllers — who are not being paid during the shutdown — are calling out of work.

AUS Data Hub: Passenger totals, busiest months and new flights in 2025 and 2026

While Austin is not on the list of airports with expected flight cuts, the FAA has implemented several ground delays at AUS in recent weeks due to low staffing in the airport’s air traffic control tower.

The airport recommends passengers keep an eye on their flight status and connect with their airline directly if needed.
