AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Independent School District is set to host a wiffle ball event on Sunday to benefit AISD families impacted by the disruption of USDA SNAP benefits.
The event will be held at Nelson Field, located at 7105 Berkman Drive, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The entry fee to participate is $10 per person, or one bag of non-perishable groceries, according to AISD.
KXAN Midday Anchors Will DuPree and Avery Travis spoke to organizers, Head Football Coach at LASA, Eric Martanovic, and Campus Athletic Director Gary Howard.
The two spoke about what motivated them to put on the event.
“I think we knew that there was just going to be a really big impact on the students of the school district. We have roughly 73,000 students at Austin ISD, and over half of them are economically disadvantaged. The impact of this could be very large. The impacts that it’s just going to have in the classroom and family life, and all the other things that go along with normal life,” Martanovic said.
The organizers also spoke of where the resources will go after the event has concluded on Sunday.
“The plan is to distribute them to the campuses, so that they could distribute those further to the families,” Howard said.
Martanovic said if you are unable to attend the event, you are encouraged to drop off non-perishable groceries at your neighborhood school.
