Austin police recommend you trick or treat in a group, remind your kids not to enter a stranger’s home for candy, only stop at well-lit houses, and follow traffic signals.

APD also offered some tips on how you can keep your child safe from any potential dangers in their candy.

APD recommended setting rules about not eating treats until your child comes home and immediately inspecting all treats before allowing your child to eat them, including any homemade treats or food.

“Candy that has been opened should be thrown away,” APD said.

For drivers, Austin police stressed the importance of keeping an eye out for pedestrians throughout Halloween night

Austin police also said it was important to safely enjoy the city’s nightlife, including on 6th Street.

The department said it would close part of 6th Street to vehicular traffic Friday, starting at 7 p.m.

Police said the city was expecting a large number of visitors to the entertainment district.

“This weekend draws a big crowd. Everyone likes to show off their costumes—it’s fun,” APD said. “We want everyone to have a good time and most of all be safe.”
