CEDAR CREEK, Texas (KXAN) — Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, crews broke ground Tuesday on an overpass at the existing intersection of Tucker Hill Lane and State Highway 71 in Cedar Creek.
The project will address the surge in population growth and increased traffic volume in Travis and Bastrop Counties, according to TxDOT. It’s part of a larger project to improve the SH 71 East Corridor, which includes plans to remove all traffic signals on SH 71 between Austin and Houston.
“SH 71 serves as a major corridor for drivers traveling to and from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the City of Bastrop, and east to Houston,” said a TxDOT spokesperson in a press release.
In addition to the new overpass, the project also includes new one-way frontage roads and expanded accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.
TxDOT reports the $58.5 million build will use 24.5 acres of right of way at the Tucker Hill Lane intersection, and said no displacements are required.
Last year, TxDOT wrapped on a similar SH 71 project along Ross Road and Kellam Road in Travis County. The construction featured an overpass at the two intersections and new frontage roads.
Construction is scheduled to end in the fall of 2028.
