AUSTIN (KXAN) — Wouldn’t it be nice if the The Beach Boys were to come to Austin and perform? Well, Austinites are in luck, as the rock and roll icons will headline Longhorn City Limits (LCL) Saturday.
The performance is happening after the Texas Longhorns play Vanderbilt, according to a news release from the University of Texas at Austin.
Local band The Nightowls will kick off LCL at 8:30 a.m. with soul and funk on the LBJ Lawn. According to UT, admission to the event is free during the season for all concerts.
“The Beach Boys are true American trailblazers whose music continues to bring joy to audiences across generations,” said Chris Del Conte, vice president and Lois and Richard Folger athletics director, in the release. “Their timeless hits will make for an unforgettable day at LCL for Longhorn Nation as we once again celebrate live music on the Forty Acres.”
The Beach Boys have released several iconic hits over the last six decades, including songs like “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “California Girls,” “Fun, Fun, Fun” and more, the release said.
“Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, The Beach Boys remain one of the most beloved and enduring bands in history, continuing to perform an average of 150 shows a year across the globe,” UT said.
The band was founded by member Mike Love. Earlier this year, Love was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, with his “distinctive vocals and acclaimed songwriting” that helped craft the band’s “most enduring masterpieces.” Along with Love, Bruce Johnston, joined the band in 1965, after past collaborations with Elton John and Pink Floyd, the release said.
“Together, Love and Johnston lead a talented touring lineup featuring musical director Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, Jon Bolton, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago, and John Wedemeyer that honor The Beach Boys’ rich legacy while inspiring new generations of fans,” the release said.
Refreshments from Bulleit Frontier will be at the concert for fans 21 and up. Pinkerton’s BBQ will also be available, according to UT.
