Oct. 21 was designated as Unplug Texas Day by the 89th Texas Legislature “to highlight the importance of taking breaks from digital technology and engaging in more direct, personal experiences that support social connections and well-being.”

Texas Sen. Adam Hinojosa, R-Corpus Christi, authored the bill, Senate Bill 2232. He said he did this because “sometimes the best way to recharge is to disconnect.”

“Our mental and physical health both benefit when we step away from screens and spend time with our families and communities. Unplug Texas Day encourages Texans to put down their phones, be present and focus on what truly matters. By doing so, we strengthen ourselves and the communities that make our state so special.”

HHSC has shared the following resources to as a way to help those who want to “connect without using their devices”:

  • Parenting tips are available and offer advice to parents on ways to build relationships with their children and discuss child development.
  • Good Food Good Move has recipes and more for families who want to focus on health as they unplug.
  • The Know Your Neighbor campaign encourages “social engagement and connection” as a way for Texans to get to know their older neighbors to “reduce isolation and loneliness.”
  • Texercise provides nutritional resources, free physical activity and more.
