AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police Oversight (APO) released its 2024 annual report, which showed nearly 850 complaints were forwarded from the office to Austin Police. APO also recommended investigations for 159 of those complaints.
APO said APD investigated all 159 complaints, which resulted in 69 sustained complaints. It also said that the sustained external complaints “grew nearly 400% compared to 14 in 2023.”
In its 2023 report, APO said it forwarded 578 complaints to APD and recommended 215 be investigated. APD investigated 138.
APO said “125 officers were disciplined, 9 were the subject of external community complaints, and 116 were the subject of internal complaints.” Furthermore, APO also issued “21 disciplinary objections or recommendations.”
Other highlights from different teams, as provided by APO, can be seen below:
- The Complaints Division reported it received 1,052 community contacts, which resulted in 841 external complaints. Those complaints involved 813 APD officers.
- The Policy and Research Division proposed 26 “policy recommendations to APD’s General Orders.” This includes “expanded body-worn camera use, a standalone drone policy, appearance standards aligned with the CROWN Act, and enhanced oversight of off-duty officer conduct.”
- “The Communications and Community Engagement Division hosted or participated in 50 public events or engagements to connect with community members.”
