AUSTIN (KXAN) —A police officer with the Austin Police Department has been removed from patrol and placed on restricted duty after video of an incident on 6th Street according to APD.
KXAN received emails about the incident and reached out to Austin Police for more details.
“Last night, an Austin Police officer struck an individual during a crowd control incident on Sixth Street. After reviewing the video footage, I share the community’s concern and take this matter very seriously. The officer has been removed from patrol and placed on restricted duty pending a thorough investigation,” said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis in a statement to KXAN.
APD will be reviewing camera footage and conducting interviews with the officer involved and witnesses.
“I want to assure our community and partners this investigation will be thorough, transparent, and timely. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” said Davis in the statement.
Details are still limited and KXAN is working to find out more and will update this story when we know more.
The name of the officer has not been released at this time.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson also weighed in on the video that has been circling around on social media.
“I have seen the video of an Austin Police Officer on 6th Street last night. The action is inexcusable and indefensible. There is no room in APD for such violent behavior or for someone who claims to be a public servant and acts that way. I know that Chief Davis will take appropriate action, including action that leads to termination. Again, there is no room for such offensive, ridiculous action.” – Mayor Kirk Watson
Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the APD Special Investigations Unit (512) 974-6840.
