Search warrants reveal potential for breakthrough in 1988 murder of a Lakeway mother

LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) — It’s a mystery that’s evaded investigators for more than 37 years. Who shot and killed Elizabeth “Betty” Thomas?

Why would someone target the beloved 45-year-old wife, mother and soon-to-be grandmother from Lakeway? Why was her body found in the trunk of her own car at a motel in Austin more than 20 miles away from her home?

Through the decades, rumors swirled in the tight-knit and affluent suburb of Lakeway. According to reporting at the time, investigators suspected a professional hit, and they examined whether Thomas’ murder was connected to her own father-in-law’s death eight years earlier. Lakeway police investigators now say both theories led to dead ends. However, new search warrants, filed this year and discovered by KXAN Investigators, point to a possible breakthrough in the case.

In this week’s episode of Unsolved: Central Texas, Avery Travis sits down with Lieutenant Jason Brown, who leads the Special Operations Division for the Lakeway Police Department and serves as the lead detective on the case.

Lt. Brown talks about how his team is hopeful DNA analysis could soon lead them to the person responsible for Thomas’ death and reveals what key discoveries led investigators to the precipice of what they hope will finally be justice for Betty Thomas.

New episodes of Unsolved: Central Texas launch every Thursday at 1 p.m. on the KXAN+ streaming app. To download KXAN+, search KXAN on your preferred streaming device, including Roku, Apple TV, Samsung and Amazon Fire TV. You can also find all episodes of Unsolved: Central Texas on-demand in the KXAN+ Original Programs category anytime on KXAN+.
