AUSTIN (KXAN) — The annual matchup against Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl has arrived. But after the performance against Florida, are the Longhorns ready for the undefeated Sooners?
“Obviously we didn’t play well on Saturday,” Arch Manning said following Texas’ 29-21 loss.
The Longhorns managed to produce 341 yards of offense to the Gators, but the defense allowed 457 yards to a struggling Florida. Not a good recipe for a rivalry game in the middle of the season.
“A lot of guys go to OU to play Texas in this game and a lot of guys come here [Texas] to play OU in this game,” Manning said.
Manning was sacked six times by the Gators. Doubling Florida’s season total (three) before Saturday’s matchup.
Since the loss on the road, Texas is 3-2 overall. Leaving Florida in the rearview and focusing on Oklahoma.
“There’s no other feeling in football besides the Red River Rivalry,” said safety Michael Taaffe. “There’s no other game like this. It’s a unique game and I would say just be ready. It’s a big momentum game and you make plays, you get the orange side behind you.”
Texas won last year’s matchup 34-3. Saturday, the Longhorns look to make history. If Sark and his team leave Dallas with a win, it will be the first time Texas won back to back in 16 years.
“We’re definitely headed into this week kind of with a chip on our shoulder,” Offensive Lineman Trevor Goosby said. “We’re in a be here now mindset. We’re just taking it one day at a time and making sure that we’re taking it one day at a time.”
This will be the 121st meeting between Texas and Oklahoma. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central Time.
