AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin FC is back in the Major League Soccer playoffs for the first time since 2022.
Despite losing to St. Louis City FC 3-1 on Saturday, Verde and Black have done enough to secure a playoff spot after Vancouver topped San Jose 4-1 on Sunday. It’s the second time in franchise history they’ve made the postseason.
Austin FC can stay out of a play-in wild card match as a No. 8 or 9 seed with a win against either LAFC on Oct. 12 or San Jose on Oct. 18. Austin would then earn a spot in a best-of-3 series as one of the top 7 seeds to open the postseason.
As it currently stands, Austin is tied with Portland at 44 points for sixth place, but the Timbers have only one match remaining to accumulate points.
The top nine teams from each conference qualify for the postseason. All playoff spots will be confirmed Oct. 18, the last day of the regular season.
Austin FC finished second in the Western Conference in 2022, falling in the conference championship game. Sebastian Driussi, the captain of that squad, finished second in the MLS MVP voting.
