AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 9 Westlake led 52-0 at halftime and romped to a 66-0 win over Akins in the Chaparrals’ district opener on Thursday at Burger Stadium.
Hayes Brodhead returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter, and three different Chaps rushed for scores to set the tone early. Jarren Lopez, Braden Riddell and Sebastian Henault all scored on the ground in the opening frame.
Lawson Grimes hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass, his first score of the season, from backup quarterback Austin Knox with 1:55 left in the first half. Knox laid a pass over Grimes’ shoulder, and the speedy wideout ran it down, laying out with a full extension to catch it.
The Chaps saved the most exciting score for last. With Akins trying to put points on the board with a 28-yard field goal attempt, senior Brady Jones broke through the line and blocked the kick. The ball took one big bounce off the Burger Stadium turf, and Freddie Tester gobbled it up and returned it 80 yards for his first varsity touchdown.
Westlake (4-1, 1-0) takes on Austin High on Oct. 9. Akins (4-2, 0-2) has a bye next week before taking on the Maroons on Oct. 17
