AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, the Austin Police Department announced a new initiative to fight off vehicle burglaries in the city’s parks.

The new plan will have APD focus on prevention efforts with coordinated enforcement to deter burglars from breaking into vehicles, per a news release from the city of Austin. The police department is collaborating with the District Attorney’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety on the initiative.

Car burglaries continue as APD points to repeat offenders

“To preserve the sense of safe and enjoyment of these public areas, this partnership is dedicated to deterring vehicle burglaries, thereby ensuring that residents and visitors can continue to relish these public spaces without the threat of theft,” the city said.

However, there are some things that Austinites can do to protect their vehicle at city parks, as provided by the city below:

  • Always lock your doors
  • Hide valuables
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Use anti-theft devices
  • Be aware of your surroundings

KXAN reported in August there were multiple vehicle break-ins at popular spots, like Zilker Park, Mount Bonnell, Red Bud Isle and around Austin High School. APD said at the time it made arrests in those cases.

According to an APD crime map, it showed 43 car burglaries in a 2,000 foot radius of Mount Bonnell since July 1. Additionally, KXAN looked at a 2,000-foot radius around Austin High School near the Hike and Bike Trail, which showed that 40 car burglaries happened since July 1.
