Firefighter injured after fire reported at Domain, AFD says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A firefighter was injured after crews with the Austin Fire Department responded to a fire at Domain in north Austin, said Thayer Smith, AFD assistant chief of operations, during a media briefing Tuesday.

Around 12:45 p.m., AFD crews responded to a report of smoke at an apartment at the Domain, which was “emanating smoke around the Louis Vuitton store” at 11600 Century Oaks Terrace, Smith said.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm around 1:28 p.m. and then a third-alarm response around 2:46 p.m., Thayer said. He said this happened, because the fire was “very difficult to access” with there being residential areas and stores in the building.

“Crews continues to find fire both above, below and to the sides of them in this residential space on the second and third floors of this particular building,” Thayer said. “That’s why it was so manpower intensive — to get enough crews to the scene, to evacuate the stores, evacuate the apartments and then make access to the fire.”

According to AFD, northbound MoPac Expressway at the Duval Road exit is blocked, due to crews on the scene.

Smith said while it’s in the “very preliminary” phase into what caused the fire, he said it’s “more than likely to be something electrical.”

AFD posted an update on X and confirmed the fire was ruled accidental and was caused by an electrical short in a wall.

As a result of the Domain fire, 28 apartments and multiple businesses were affected. 16 residents contacted Red Cross for assistance. Of those residents, six were “directly affected by fire damage,” AFD said.

AFD said the damage is estimated at $4.5 million.
