AUSTIN (KXAN) — There are a lot of amazing students across Central Texas, and one of those students is Boone Macon.
Macon is a junior at Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School in Austin Independent School District and he was recently selected out of nearly 3,000 applicants nationwide for NASA’s prestigious STEM enhancement in Earth Science internship.
This summer, he worked with NASA scientists, went out and did hours of field work around the city and he looked over satellite data as part of his internship.
Macon said his internship project was based on biodiversity and he was able to get out and about around Austin to help with the project.
He said if the opportunity to work for NASA comes up one day he would love to do just that. But until then he says he will be focusing in on math, science and piano, which are just a few of the things he enjoys.
“I am definitely interested in going into STEM; especially physics, astronomy, chemistry and math. And I am definitely interested in piano,” said Macon. “But I think that is an extracurricular in the future that is special to me.”
Macon encourages other students in high school to join school clubs and get involved early in careers or subjects that interest them.
Macon also highlighted LASA, his teachers and parents for helping him prepare for the internship.
