'The standard is the standard': Longhorns reflect on penalties against San Jose State

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s not often that a team walks away from a 38-7 win in week two of the season, still unhappy with the way they performed as a whole.

Ohio State is in the rearview mirror, but the mistakes were still showing up in the win against San Jose State. The offense accounted for 472 total yards, but clearly left food on the plate with errors.

Sarkisian: Punishments for penalties in practice are coming

The Longhorns committed 12 penalties for 115 yards and need to clean up the errors ahead of Saturday’s game against UTEP.

“The 12 penalties, that wasn’t the standard at all,” running back CJ Baxter said. “After the game we felt it and that was the first thing we all said, ‘we could’ve played better’.”

Following Saturday’s game, Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian said “my foot’s got to get in their butts here on Monday morning,” and called the amount of penalties “unacceptable”.

It’s safe to say the team felt Sarkisian’s message during Monday’s practice.

“He was pretty hard on us.. as he should be,” safety Michael Taaffe said. “It’s nothing that the opponent is doing, it’s everything that you’re doing to yourself.”

Despite the penalties, Texas found the production on defense. Four takeaways led to 21 points by the offense.

Arch Manning completed 19-30 passing, 295 passing yards, one interception, and five total touchdowns. CJ Baxter led the run game with 64 yards on 13 attempts, while Parker Livingstone gave the Spartans issues in the receiving game with two touchdowns on 128 receiving yards.
