AUSTIN (KXAN) — Television crews have cameras everywhere during a live sports broadcast, and they see just about everything. Texas quarterback Arch Manning learned that the hard way during Texas’ 38-7 win over San Jose State.
The broadcast showed a tight shot of Manning grimacing after he threw a pass, suggesting he might be in pain or discomfort. The game continued, without interruption, and Manning stayed in the game and looked fine. He finished the game with 295 yards and four touchdowns and an interception on 19 of 30 passing.
That didn’t stop people from speculating about a potential injury, however, and Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian emphatically denied it both after the game and during a press conference Monday.
“Arch Manning seemed to be having some throwing pains … ” the reporter said before Sarkisian jumped in.
“According to who?” Sarkisian said.
“Arch,” the reporter said.
Said Sarkisian: “Arch told you that?”
“No,” the reporter said. “It just looked like it.”
“He doesn’t have any,” Sarkisian said.
“Is there an explanation as to why it looked like that?” the reporter said.
“I don’t know,” Sarkisian said. “I’ve never filmed any of you guys when you’re using the bathroom, so I don’t know what faces you make while you’re doing that.”
After some laughter in the press corps, Sarkisian asked the room rhetorically, “You guys like that?” And then he told the reporter to ask another question later.
“I’ll come back to you,” he said.
The reporter asked the last question of the press conference, about how wide receiver Parker Livingstone shrugged off a holding penalty to catch an 84-yard touchdown a few players later, and Sarkisian answered it like any other question.
When Manning spoke with reporters after Sarkisian, reporters did not ask Manning about his shoulder.
