AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded two grants, totaling $405,954, to Austin Community College and Granger Independent School District.
The Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants will be used to purchase and install equipment for career and technical education (CTE) training programs that will train 195 students in welding and HVAC mechanics.
“The JET grant program is a powerful tool for both the local and state economy,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza.
In June 2024, Central Texas nonprofits received over $6.3 million in funding to provide students with skills training in CTE careers.
A data report from THECB Data Bridge surveys college students’ performance from the 2022 – 2023 academic year supports that there is both success and interest in CTE programs.
Esparza presented the awards on Wednesday at Austin Community College Riverside Campus.
“Today’s grants will help these two schools address current and future demand by training hundreds of students for good-paying jobs as HVAC mechanics and welders,” said Esparza.
