AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, The Other Ones Foundation (TOOF) announced it appointed its new executive director as Elizabeth Baker, TOOF founder Chris Baker’s wife.
Chris Baker will remain “actively involved” in the nonprofit, TOOF said in a news release.
The nonprofit “is dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives through shelter, opportunity, and support,” the release said. TOOF also works with city and county leaders to reach that goal.
“I’m honored to carry forward TOOF’s history and values while advancing the mission with a sustainable and collaborative vision,” Elizabeth Baker said in the release. “The strategic plan we adopted last year provides an excellent roadmap for expanding our role as not only a trusted emergency shelter partner but also a leader in workforce development for people experiencing homelessness. I hope to continue strengthening TOOF’s capacity and impact. Together, we can deepen TOOF’s impact in the Austin community and beyond.”
TOOF is known for running Camp Esperanza, which is a tiny home community in east Austin that supports those experiencing homelessness.
After a national search, the TOOF Board of Directors chose to appoint Baker and believe “her experience, coupled with her leadership style and proven impact, made her the clear choice to lead the organization in the future.”
“Chris and the team have built TOOF from the ground up and helped thousands take a step forward. We are grateful for this vision and commitment to solving the homelessness problem in Austin,” said Chris Turnley, board chair of TOOF. “We are confident that Elizabeth and the team will advance the mission of the organization further, and, in doing so, empower thousands more to regain autonomy and stability, while breaking down systemic barriers in homelessness, paving the way for long-term societal change.”
Before taking on the executive director role, Elizabeth Baker served as chief strategy officer and chief programs officer, according to TOOF. The nonprofit said she helped secure more than $20 million in funding and expanded “community partnerships that strengthened TOOF’s impact and reach.”
