AUSTIN (KXAN) — Building new nuclear reactors in Central Texas is getting an extra push. President Trump’s Department of Energy selected Aalo Atomics, a local nuclear energy company, as one of several companies that will help boost the nation’s nuclear energy industry.
The company, which builds modular nuclear reactors, will be assigned a “concierge team” by the Department of Energy (DOE) that will help cut through red tape. The goal is to test the company’s experimental power plant, Aalo-X, by July 4, 2026.
According to a blog post on the company’s website, this type of project typically can take at least five years. The concierge team will help reduce the time it takes to wait for “signatures.”
President Trump’s goal, according to an executive order signed this May, is “to construct, operate, and achieve criticality of at least three test reactors using the DOE authorization process by July 4, 2026.”
Ten companies were selected by the DOE as part of their effort to expediate the testing of advanced nuclear reactors: Aalo Atomics Inc, Antares Nuclear Inc, Atomic Alchemy Inc, Deep Fission Inc, Last Energy Inc, Natura Resources LLC, Oklo Inc (selected for two projects), Radiant Industries Inc, Terrestrial Energy Inc. and Valar Atomics Inc.
In April, Aalo Atomics hosted an event to showcase their first nuclear reactor and manufacturing space. The Aalo Pod, the first reactor is a 50 megawatt electric nuclear power plant “purpose built for powering AI data centers,” CEO Matt Loszak said.
The company will test their new reactor near Idaho Falls, near the Idaho National Laboratory. The land was assigned by the DOE.
After a successful launch of the Aalo-X reactor, the company plans to continue testing through the second half of 2026.
