SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — As Texas State prepares to join the Pac-12 Conference next year, this year the university has been breaking enrollment records across the board.
Texas State University President Kelly Damphousse joined KXAN’s Freddy Vela for an interview about the start of classes Monday.
Damphousse said they are just shy of 45,000 students this year, with about 9,300 freshman. The school is seeing record enrollment overall, but also a record freshman class, international student enrollment, enrollment at the Round Rock campus, and online enrollment.
The president said about half of Texas State students are first generation whose parents didn’t go to college, like himself, and gave the freshman class some advice.
“Get out of your dorm room, go to class. College is not like high school, it’s a little harder, and get involved somehow,” he said. “Find a way to get involved in some student organization so you feel like you’re part of something bigger and smaller at the same time.”
Damphousse said while they’re excited to help build the Pac-12 Conference from scratch, they’re looking forward to finishing off this last year the Sun Belt.
“We loved being in the Sun Belt Conference, but we’re really excited about being in the Pac-12, and our students are as well,” he said.
