AUSTIN (KXAN) — U.S. Rep. Greg Casar announced his campaign for reelection in a video on social media Monday.
This comes a few days after the Texas Senate gave final approval to legislation to redraw the state’s congressional map, which could give Republicans five new congressional seats.
The controversial congressional map, if adopted, would pit Casar and U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, two Democratic incumbents, against one another in an Austin-area district. But last week, Doggett said he would end his reelection campaign if the new congressional map is approved by the courts.
“If the courts give Trump a victory in his scheme to maintain control of a compliant House, I will not seek reelection in the reconfigured CD37, even though it contains over 2/3rd of my current constituents,” said Doggett in a statement Thursday.
Casar’s campaign said the potentially new District 37, where the congressman would run, “includes Casar’s home, 250,000 of his current constituents, and his former city council district.”
“Trump and Abbott just rammed through maps designed to kick people like me out of office. They don’t want me in Congress because they don’t want us to be heard. But we’re not going anywhere,” Casar wrote on X.
Casar’s campaign plans to hold a press conference Monday at the Texas AFL-CIO headquarters.
