AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Williamson County officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the $139 million U.S. 183 Frontage Roads project on Friday.
TxDOT and county officials all gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony at the Brushy Creek Trailhead, located at 2600 Brushy Creek Loop in Cedar Park. Construction for the project began in July, according to the agency.
“This project will add two non-tolled, grade-separated lanes on each side of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority’s 183A toll road from RM 1431 to Avery Ranch Boulevard. A new shared-use path will also be constructed on the northbound side of the roadway, connecting to the existing trailhead,” TxDOT said in a news release.
Tucker Ferguson, district engineer for TxDOT’s Austin district, said this project has been “decades in the making.”
“It had many starts and stops, and we went through some funding challenges. But we were able to maintain the funding, keep the design going and getting it to this point today is a victory for TxDOT and for the city of Cedar Park and for Williamson County,” he told KXAN Friday.
He added this project, which will take about three and a half years to complete, will “open up opportunities for development in the city.”
“It will open up opportunities for reducing emissions, because cars won’t be sitting in traffic, it’ll open opportunities for mobility and moving more people through corridor and also enhance safety as they’re using these new roadways,” Ferguson said.
