TCSO said the volunteers would provide assistance to victims of various criminal and crisis circumstances, including:

  • family violence
  • sexual assaults
  • child/elder abuse
  • aggravated assaults
  • robberies/burglaries
  • suicides
  • structure fires
  • death notifications
  • natural/accidental deaths
  • major traffic accidents

According to TCSO, the VSU volunteers are required to complete a five-week training program. The current program is scheduled for May 31 through June 28 and is held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

TCSO said volunteers would assist with phone calls and in-person responses, first being accompanied before being cleared to take calls for service independently.

To qualify, volunteers must be 21 or older, have a reliable, insured vehicle, a working cell phone, and a schedule that allows for four-hour shifts of on-call duty per month. A background check that includes fingerprinting is also required.
