Paxton announces new reporting rule for district, county attorneys

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Attorney General Ken Paxton adopted a new rule Monday that enhanced reporting requirements for Texas district and county attorneys, according to a press release.

Paxton said the new rule would “ensure accountability and promote public safety.”

KXAN reached out to Travis County District Attorney José Garza’s office for a comment regarding the new rule. We will update this article when a comment is provided.

The rule would require district and county attorneys representing a county with a population of 400,000 or more to provide specific performance reports to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

The OAG said this rule would give the office access to detailed report information upon request, specify a process to attain any overdue reports and outline consequences if a district or county attorney intentionally seeks to violate the enhanced reporting requirements.

“District and County Attorneys have a duty to protect the communities they serve by upholding the law and vigorously prosecuting dangerous criminals,” Paxton said. “In many major counties, the people responsible for safeguarding millions of Texans have instead endangered lives by refusing to prosecute criminals and allowing violent offenders to terrorize law-abiding Texans. This rule will enable citizens to hold rogue DA’s accountable.”
