ROCKDALE, Texas (KXAN) — An Austin woman was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the death of her mother in Rockdale on Monday evening, according to police.
Brittney Shields, 35, of Austin, was identified by the Rockdale Police Department as the suspect in the death of her mother, Stephanie McBride, 58, of Rockdale.
Rockdale Police said in a post on Facebook that officers responded to a 911 call reporting a “deceased female” in a residence in the 600 block of Rice Street on Tuesday around 5:13 p.m.
Officers found McBride dead at the scene and said she had multiple gunshot wounds, according to the post. Milam County Justice of Peace Greg Hoelscher pronounced McBride dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy to be conducted, the post noted.
Police said evidence at the scene led them to “quickly obtain an arrest warrant for McBride’s daughter,” and that police believe she was the “lone actor in this offense.”
A woman by the name of Brittney Shields was also named in an Amber Alert that was issued Monday for a 5-year-old and a 6-year-old who were last seen in the 600 block of Rice Street Monday. The alert noted that she was “wanted/last seen with” the children.
The Amber Alert was discontinued late Monday night, and Rockdale Police noted in the Facebook post that “Shields’ children were also recovered, and were unharmed.”
KXAN has reached out to the Rockdale Police Department and Milam County Sheriff’s Office to confirm whether Shields was involved in the Amber Alert and if she’ll face connected charges.
Travis County Jail online records show that she was booked into custody overnight after being arrested by the Austin Police Department. Jail records show she is facing an out-of-county felony charge and is being held in the Travis County Jail for another agency with no bond.
