AUSTIN (KXAN) — The No. 5 Texas Longhorns baseball team has lost one of its best hitters for the rest of the regular season.
Outfielder Max Belyeu fractured his thumb against Missouri but could return for the postseason, Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com reported Monday. The team confirmed the injury but considers Belyeu to be “week-to-week.”

Belyeu’s injury happened in the last inning of the series opener Friday against the Tigers after he dove to catch a fly ball in right field. He landed awkwardly on his hand and grimaced as he stood up to throw the ball into the infield. After a replay review, it was ruled that Belyeu made the catch, and remained in the game after being checked out by medical staff and head coach Jim Schlossnagle. Belyeu didn’t play in Saturday’s doubleheader.
Texas won the game 15-4 in seven innings.
Belyeu, the Big 12 Conference player of the year last year, was on his way to another productive season. He was hitting .358 with six home runs, 22 RBIs and an OPS of 1.107.
Rogers also reported some better news for the Longhorns on the injury front. He said injuries to freshman infielder Adrian Rodriguez and catcher Rylan Galvan weren’t as bad as originally thought and they are day-to-day.
Texas (23-3, 8-1 SEC) faces Texas State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field and will host No. 3 Georgia in a 3-game series beginning Friday.
