Spring blooms soon with seasonal allergens returning

AUSTIN (KXAN) – March 20 marks the very first day of spring and with the arrival of a new season comes allergens many haven’t had to deal with in months. From oak, mulberry, mesquite, and grass, there will be plenty of pollen in the air to give those with allergies a run for the medicine.

Dr. John Villacis with St. David’s North Austin Medical Center says you can normally tell when oak is picking up by the yellow dust-like powder you see on your cars.

“Typically we will see the oak pollens really start pollinating and releasing their pollen by the end of March or the first week or two of April. It really depends on the weather.”

While there are specific allergens each season, the effect is almost the same for each individual dealing with allergies.

“The classic symptoms of allergies are itchy eyes, itchy nose, sneezing, and congestion,” said Dr. Villacis. “Different people respond differently but I think it has to do more with their exposure. So if you were an indoor person you may not feel it as much as a person who would be running outside.”

Dr. Villacis says the best thing to do is see a doctor if you are feeling any type of symptoms during the spring.
