AUSTIN (KXAN) — While some Austinites dipped their toes into 2025, others dove head first as part of the annual Barton Springs Polar Bear Plunge.

The polar plunge has been a New Year’s staple in Austin for more than 45 years, nonprofit organization Save Our Springs Alliance said. The free event kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and runs until 2 p.m., according to the Austin Watershed Protection Department.

Not only is the tradition a staple for the city of Austin, but for many of its residents. Maya Rodriguez comes to Barton Springs Pool every year following a run around Lady Bird Lake with some friends.

She said it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the past year and start the new one on a high — and clean! — note.

“For me, I always think about the past year and all the great things that happened, and I think about my friends, my family and the great weather that we have in Austin,” she told KXAN. “And then when I jump into the pool, I kind of repeat the same thoughts and I want more of that….kind of start fresh and clean in a way.”
