The New York Times named Comadre Panadería as one of its “22 of the Best Bakeries Across the U.S. Right Now.”

Comadre Panadería started as a pop-up in Seattle in 2017, eventually moving to owner Mariela Camacho’s home state of Texas in 2019, then later becoming a brick-and-mortar inside of 12th Street Kitchen in 2023, according to the bakery’s website.

Comadre Panadería was birthed from Camacho’s homesickness for her Mexican culture and the need to raise funds for natural disaster victims in Mexico and Puerto Rico, per the website.

In the article, Dallas-based food journalist Priya Krishna brags on a number of the delicacies offered at the bakery, noting that “Camacho’s pastries are the stuff of Barbie-fueled, masa-laden dreams.”

The bakery offers a variety of items inspired by traditional Mexican desserts, some with a Texas influence. Comadre sells conchas, mesquite pecan polvoron, manzanilla shortbread, and more. The menu also includes several vegan drinks, like a Texas pecan horchata, agua frescas, and caffeinated, wild-foraged Texas tea.

According to its website, Comadre Panadería is a two-time James Beard Foundation semi-finalist and has been recognized by local and national publications including Eater, Bon Appetit, the NY Times, and Texas Monthly.

Items are made fresh daily and often sell out, but customers can pre-order certain items online.

Comadre Panadería’s hours are Thursday-Sunday: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Downtown Houston’s Koffeteria also made The New York Times list. The Cambodian-owned bakery showcases items influenced by the Southeast Asian country’s cuisine as well as the diverse flavors of Houston, its website states.
