Austin ISD chief financial officer arrested, accused of insurance fraud

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Williamson County prosecutors dropped the charge against Austin Independent School District’s Chief Financial Officer Eduardo Ramos, according to the Austin Independent School District. Austin ISD officials said Superintendent Matias Segura approved Ramos’s return from administrative leave on Thursday.

Ramos, 51, was arrested by the Austin Independent School District Police Department on July 31 on an insurance fraud charge unrelated to his work at the district. The Round Rock Police Department issued the arrest warrant, but has not yet released the record showing the details leading up to his arrest.

Austin ISD talks position cuts as they face budget deficit

Austin ISD officials said on Thursday they received a letter from the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office declining to prosecute the insurance fraud charge. The Williamson County District Attorney has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

“From the beginning, I released a statement that said, ‘We have a judicial process. I ask that everyone let the process run its course before rushing to judgement.’ I trusted the process, and as a result, I’m now reinstated,” Ramos said in a statement to KXAN Thursday.

District officials say Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura placed Ramos on leave the same day as his arrest. They also said the felony charge was unrelated to his work with the district. According to an announcement on the district’s website, Ramos previously submitted his resignation on July 23, with his last day scheduled for Aug. 16.

Austin ISD approves 2024-2025 budget

According to the district, Ramos still plans to leave the district in good standing in mid-August.

According to the district’s website, Ramos oversaw Austin ISD finances, including the budget, purchasing, state and federal grants, and the Historically Utilized Business program. His district biography stated he worked in school finance for 27 years, including as chief of finance and operations in Pflugerville ISD and deputy superintendent of finance and operations in Hutto ISD.

The district said that during his tenure, Ramos balanced Austin ISD’s operating budget for the first time in six years in 2021-22 and 2022-23. The district is facing a budget deficit going into the new school year, similar to several other school districts across Texas.
