‘Checking for a pulse’: Attendees helped victims of Round Rock Juneteenth festival shooting

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Round Rock police are still looking for the suspect or suspects tied to the deadly Round Rock Juneteenth festival shooting that left two women dead and 14 others injured.

“Our ultimate goal is to find who did this and make sure that the families get justice,” Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said over the weekend.

Old Settlers Park shooting suspect description

In a press conference Sunday, Banks said police believe the subject is “armed and dangerous” and not to approach the suspect but instead call 911.

When asked if there may be more than one suspect, Banks said the investigation is ongoing.

“There’s a lot of interviewing going on to find out who did what, how this started, why it started and why it ended up in a very senseless tragedy — and so anybody that was involved in this incident we will hold accountable,” he said.

Banks described one suspect as a 5’7″ Black man between the ages of 19 and 20 with a thin build. Police said he had hair in short dreads and was last seen wearing a white hoodie.

“Turn yourself in,” Banks said Sunday. “If you’re man enough to carry a gun and pull the trigger, be man enough to step up. Turn yourself in. Let’s figure out why you chose to take lives and injure people.”

How to submit a tip in the Round Rock shooting

People with information can call 1-800-252-TIPS or submit a tip online.

Anyone with video or information about the shooting can call Round Rock Police Detective Maio at (512) 341-3135 or email rmaio@roundrocktexas.gov. Police also ask anyone with photo or video evidence to submit it online.

Reward offered for tips that lead to Round Rock shooting suspects

On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott said the governor’s public safety office is offering up to $10,000 leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect or suspects.

Two other rewards are available for information. The Williamson County Crime Stoppers are offering $5,000 and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering $5,000.

Insight into the investigation

Old Settlers Park has now reopened to the public after being closed for an extensive investigation over the weekend. Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, gave KXAN some insight into what might be happening behind the scenes.

He says law enforcement was doing extensive interviews, vetting tips, using ballistics tools and combing for video of vehicles or people matching the suspect’s description fleeing the scene.

“You may have people who have dash cams in their cars that that caught this. Obviously, the Round Rock police that were there have body cams so their body cams got activated. They’ll look at all that body cam video,” Farris said.

Farris says with federal partners like the FBI and ATF involved, Round Rock police will have additional investigative tools at their disposal.

“It’s going to be a very detailed, a very long investigation. Obviously, now they’re trying to ID the suspect because the main goal in this is to get the suspect in custody and hold them accountable for what they did. And then the investigation will continue, you know, long after that,” Farris said.
