DPS sent 115 personnel on first day of protests at UT Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three units with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) sent a total of 115 personnel to the University of Texas at Austin campus April 24 as people gathered at a protest in support of Gaza.

KXAN obtained this information through a public information request to DPS.


Leaked memo reveals inside details of UT’s protest response

During the first day of the protest, 57 individuals were arrested.

San Antonio response sent the most with 50 DPS personnel, Capitol FFO Team sent 29 and Capitol – CMT sent 36.

Of the 115, three were lieutenants, 13 were sergeants, 93 were troopers and six belonged to special teams, which included less lethal, Unmanned Aircraft Systems and medics.

Four personnel with the San Antonio response also belong to an arrest team and one trooper with Capitol – CMT belonged to a K9 duty station.

  • Lampasas, Texas – about 68 miles from Austin
  • Belton, Texas – about 61 miles from Austin
  • Burnet, Texas – about 61 miles from Austin
  • Giddings, Texas – about 56 miles from Austin
  • New Braunfels, Texas – about 48 miles from Austin

Since the April 24 demonstration, the UT campus has been the site of several other protests. Over 100 people have been arrested in connection with events on campus.
