KYLE, Texas (KXAN) – At its meeting on Tuesday, the Kyle City Council will consider whether more cell towers are needed throughout the city to bridge gaps in coverage and support the rapid population growth.
Some Kyle residents told KXAN on Monday that there are spots throughout the city where their mobile phones lose service.
“There’s all kinds of little pockets that get messed up,” said James Boisvenue, who has lived in Kyle for two years. ”I definitely think we can do a better job here. I definitely think we can have better coverage.”
The city council will consider Tuesday amending its code to allow additional towers or antennas to be built. Additionally, they could discuss locations where structures could be erected. The council also has the option to decide not to build additional wireless telecommunication infrastructure.
“All of us rely on our cell phones more and more with the ditching of landlines,” said Melissa McCollum, Kyle’s chief development officer. “With the population growth in Kyle, everyone is wanting more and more connectivity and more services.”
Additional towers could also support infrastructure that momentarily goes down, McCollum said.
“If certain towers are going out for maintenance, I think this will provide kind of backup support in general for the system,” she said.
