AUSTIN (KXAN) — Mark your calendars: on Friday, July 11, the Family Eldercare Summer Fan Drive returns to give vulnerable Central Texans relief from the heat.
The annual event has been around for 35 years, collecting and distributing fans to homebound adults and those without air conditioning.
“As Family Eldercare focuses on helping older adults and people with disabilities, but we also have families with children, families with pets, but the common denominator is that 85% of them cannot afford to have an A/C, or they live in a house or an apartment that is not equipped to have an A/C,” Family Eldercare CEO Aaron Alarcón told KXAN last year.
“So these fans … are really, really life-saving,” he continued.
NASA announced in January that the planet suffered through the hottest year on record in 2024. For Austin, 2024 was the warmest year ever, with the 72.7° mean temperature surpassing 2023 by half a degree.
